@quintessence_of_life plant ally journal entry!

Nettle.
There is a reason she is so often written about, so often chosen as one of our greatest plant allies.
Her supportive properties are so numerous, her aid to our body so all-encompassing, I could write pages and pages of all she gifts to us.

For now though, I’ll speak on what she is gifting and teaching me.
Rewind a bit, to just over two years ago, when I was pregnant with my son.
My family and I were at a local orchard picking apples, and though the rows between the trees were mowed, the areas directly under the trees were not.
My husband was getting the closest to the trees, as he could reach up higher and his balance was better (as I was about 7 months pregnant).
He was wearing knee length cargo shorts, and moments after stepping away from one of the apple trees, his ankles and calves had red itchy bumps.
He commented on how he must have gotten mosquito or gnat bites, but he almost never gets bitten before I do (I’m a mosquito magnet) and when I saw the welts on his legs, I noticed that they didn’t look much like bites.
I stepped closer to the apple tree, and saw, hiding in the grasses, patches of stinging nettle.
I laughed and told him it wasn’t bugs – it was nettle!!
Now, it’s rather interesting to note that, though I was familiar with nettle in dried form, having had nettle tea and tincture before, and seen her briefly in old plant plate drawings, I had never actually seen her fresh and in the wild.
But somehow, before I even realized what I was doing, I was identifying and going on and on about the benefits of nettle. It was a surreal moment…a moment I look back on and realize that I was REMEBERING. I had this knowing in me, this recognition, about this plant ally that I didn’t even realize was there.
Of course I googled a picture to be sure, because my head and logic decided they should check to make sure my heart and intuition were correct…and they were.

Now fast forward to the birth of my son. I had a successful VBAC with the aid of a wonderful team of nurses and my midwife, however two ours after his birth, I had a massive hemorrhage.
I was one point away (in terms of iron count in my blood) from needing a blood transfusion, that’s how much I lost.
Enter the wonderful NETTLE!! I immediately started taking her in the hospital during recovery as a tincture, that also contained dandelion and yellow dock.
I continued taking that tincture for almost a year.
At the time, I didn’t know anything about infusions, otherwise I’d have added those as well.

And that brings us to this year, at the end of May. With my son still breastfeeding, my husband losing his job, moving for his new job and honestly, not nourishing myself as much as I could/should have been, I wasn’t eating enough, I was flat out depleted.
I began to have severe anxiety like I’ve never known (and I’ve known anxiety)…so intense that I felt like I was going to lose my stomach and bowels all at the same time.
Every noise made me jump. I couldn’t sleep. The list goes on.
I had multiple blood tests done, all coming back normal.
I had been, on and off, drinking oatstraw infusions, and though it was comforting to me, I wasn’t drinking it often enough.
“Drink nettle” my body kept telling me, louder and louder.
“But you don’t like the taste” my mind told me.
Finally, one day my body just went into survival mode. I couldn’t get up, anxiety was more like a panic attack and I felt like I was dying.
I asked my husband to bring me my nettle tincture, and start water boiling for an infusion of nettle.

Long story short-ened (haha), I have been drinking nettle every day since (I also add a bit of red raspberry)…I’ve missed a day here and there and I can tell almost immediately.
I have been able to eat more, I have better sleep, less anxiety, my energy is stabilizing.
Nettle is my plant ally lifeline.

Her stalk is strong, and sure, calling to mind a strong backbone to support her prolific leaves.
I love that those leaves have a myriad of little veins running through them, making me imagine her nourishing gifts running through our veins, our nerves, gently but effectively supporting our every system.
I admire that she can be grown by seed or by her quick to spread rhizomes – she gifts us with her nourishment so bountifully!!
And She feels so grounding to me, when taken as an infusion – giving me the feeling of being stable and safe.
And I think, looking at her in her fresh wild state, that may be one of her most important gifts – grounding.
We often get (or at least I know I do) caught up in our heads, looking up, searching for “higher” things, the next best thing, to help us or heal us.
Nettle, with her sharp sting, calls us back. Reminds us that we have to be grounded FIRST.
We have to have roots FIRST, before we can grow tall, strong, higher.
She is like the deep roots of the plant world – giving us a sure foundation to build upon, aiding the effectiveness of other plant allies.
Nettle, without a doubt, has become my closest ally and my greatest plant teacher.

Thank you!!

This months theme is: Wild Nutrition

In this challenge I ask you to simply make a meal with a#plantally you gather yourself from the land! •
It could be tende#Nettle tops,#WildOnionshoots,#Dandelion blooms or her yummy bitter greens! It could be#Chickweed pesto or#Violet leaves in soup! •
This could be as easy as stepping outside your door or it may push you into discovering new areas of#land in your area you've yet to see!

Why? Because we must help our minds reconnect in the most basic#primal way by #gathering food! This simple act also gets us out doing the work of IDing plants, trusting ourselves & intuitions!

@loveren_collections wild food challenge!

Creamy Chickweed Pesto with Sweet Potato Fries

As the days are getting hotter and hotter here in Chicago my body is craving lighter meals packed with nutrition.  Spring –Fall are busy times for me, so I want to be sure have quick simple meals that fill me. For this I have been making a Creamy Chickweed Pesto (GF/V) made with cashews, chickweed, a pinch of salt, and garlic all blended up. Easy, simple, beautiful and oh so good!

Chickweed has been a favorite plant ally of mine this year! According to Susun Weed chickweed is loaded with chlorophyll, calcium, magnesium, manganese, zinc, iron, Vitamin A & C among many more nutritive benefits.  The list is long, but I’ve been using her because She helps with inflammation and joint pain. While the summer sun is starting to get high, she also helps me cool down as I work on two beautiful community permaculture sites! She’s part of my journey to reconnect to the #wisewoman way of life, whether living out in the mountains or here in the city-it’s possible to reconnect to nature with every bite you take!

Chickweed grows throughout Chicago so she’s easy to get a hold of. Last year I harvested a bit of her and let her live a season in a large container mixed with sage and lambs quarters. This year she was booming and abundant! I often transplant plant allies living in the city because the soil contamination is so bad here. But with a combination of creating sites that are safe to harvest from and growing in containers at home I find that harvesting plant allies is accessible, safe, and easy for me-and it can be for you too!

This month theme is: 🌱The Spring Hunt🌱

I want to see you seeking out plant allies & discovering them!

I want you to share your experience of joy when you find one, sadness when you fail, determination when you get back up & keep looking!

I want you to meet her in her environment, to get to know her well, to tell me what drew you to her, what have you learned about this ally on your hunt to find her, what have you learned about yourself?

I want to see what you do with her, will you gather her up & make medicine? Or will you simply be with her as you deepen a relationship? Will you do both or something different?

I want to hear your story of how far & wide you had to journey to discover her! Was she right outside your door or did you have to travel far?

Because the act of finding is a bonding thing,a reassuring thing,a way to once again prove to ourselves that we are as capable as any herbalist !

This month theme is: Herbal infusions

Infusion pulls sincere nourishment from our plant allies which in turn nourish our depleted bodies. It's astounding out how deeply we can repair years of low energy, depression, gut issues, anxiety, bone depletion, slow growing hair/nails, ailing skin, hurting joints, insomnia it goes on & on. .
.
Infusing a single ounce of herb a day into a quart jar of boiling water is life changing. The dilemma is western society minded folks don't play well with time, the time it takes for safe simple herbs to nourish our bodies. We want a reaction & damnit we want it right now!
.
.
But infusions take time, trust & consistency. With this I am happy to announce the first Demystify your medicine covens photo/story challenge of 2018.
.
.
Infusion: 16 oz challenge
My dear coven members & community at large I invite you to use of an entire pound of plant allies in the next 3 weeks! What does this mean? It means you will make/drink 16 quarts of nourishing herbal infusions!
.
.
I promise this is not as much as it sounds! As each quart of infusion only makes roughly 3 cups of liquid to drink & YOU are worth drinking 3 small cups of liquid a day!
.
.
This is 16 days straight of deeply nourishing your body
.
.
16 days of repairing health
.
.
16 days of building a vital truly lasting self care habit
.
.
16 days of allowing yourself to feel the effects of our plant allies
.
.
At the proverbial end (please keep drinking daily!)of this challenge we want to hear how you are feeling physically & emotionally. We also want to see your beautiful process!

@theninthwitch 's infusion journey

This challenge is a challenge of self-care for me. As April said: "you are worth drinking 3 small cups of liquid a day!"

Am I?

I chose nettle because my adrenals are shot, my thyroid is busted, every joint in my body aches like I’ve been repeatedly hit by a truck, I’m tired too often, my nails are brittle, I get migraines, I have horrendous periods, I’ve had 3 major surgeries in 3 years, I feel angry too often, I am needed by too many, I, who was once so able to cope with vast amounts of stress, can barely handle the slightest stress anymore.

I am only 37 and feel like my body is betraying me... or maybe I am betraying my body. I hate my job, I love my job, I want to learn something new! I want to learn something old! The old ways, wise ways, herbal ways. What if I am not good enough?

I did my research, I watched the videos, I read what my admired herbalist write about lady Nettle and felt deep down inside this is the ally I start with.

I poured boiling water over those cut dried leaves and said a prayer of healing, screwing my eyes shut...As if an herbal infusion could take me out of myself and help me become someone I don't look down upon so much. If I place enough hope in this mason jar, if I believe enough, if I am patient and trust, will my plant allies truly help me? And I worthy to be healed by such ancient medicine?

All the above thoughts and more swirled through my mind as the nettle leaves swirled through the boiling water. As I caped tha firs jar shut a certain defiance spread through my aching body. With the 'pop' of the lid, it said; "YES Yes, you can heal. You are allowed, you have a right to heal. You have right to learn. Yes’ Yes, you can heal. You are allowed, you have a right to heal. You have right to learn. Yes’

Eight hours later I winced, preparing myself for my first sip of nettle infusion. No wince necessary, I'll admit I was pleasantly surprised at the taste. Then I immediately thought I had done it wrong. Surly I would have to choke this down? How can it taste so, so, calm? If a liquid could taste of emotion, I would definitely class nettle infusion as calm. Cool and calm nettle has become a morning ritual for me for 10 days and counting. Maybe it is a placebo effect but by the second day I felt a small difference, a little more energy, a little less nerves.

Now on day 11, I feel calmer, like my frayed edges of hurt, both physical and emotional, are starting to knit shut like a broken bone healing, rough edges are becoming smooth again. my skin seems clearer, my joints ever so slightly moving with more ease. My stomach hasn't acted up in week, even my hair seems a tiny bit shinier. This is no longer a placebo effect. This is the medicine we talk of, this is the slow whole plant medicine at work. This learning. This is trusting. And yes, this is all that hope put into a mason jar!

Every morning as I decant my nettle infusion and pour her cool calm healing into my wineglass (yup! a wineglass!) she still whispers "YES" to me. And I... I whisper back, "Thank you" because, now, now I believe, yes- I am worth drinking 3small cups of liquid a day!

May your blessings be bright,

Gentiana

This month theme is: Apothecary Space

To see apothecaries be born, grow, be adorned. To see hands busy doing the work of pulling together deep intention of taking our ability to heal back into our own hands one sacred space at a time.

This can be as simple as making a place to store your herb books, herbal medicines, jars of herbs, to expand your plant ally journals into pages placed upon the walls for all to see.

Show us, the world, all of the humans who are also staring at this screen how you are taking steps in reality to reclaim what has been taken away from you by patriarchal heroic healers.

That is to say your belief in self to heal self.

As you scroll though the beautiful and heartfelt entries below we truly hope that you too will be inspired! Not only to step onto the path of Wise Woman but also to start your own safe Apothecary space!
